Over 5,000 Labour councillors signed the original #BreakingPoint petition in just two weeks in October 2018 – showing the depth of anger and dismay amongst Labour councillors at what the government is doing to local government. The petition was handed in to 10 Downing Street by campaign leaders including Cllr Nick Forbes, Cllr Michael Payne, Cllr Rishi Shori, and Cllr Lib Peck. The #BreakingPoint campaign is now being led across the country by individual Labour Groups, who are organising locally to get the message of the campaign across in their own communities: that we need an end to austerity in local government now.
Many councils have already passed motions in support of the Breaking Point campaign. The Opposition Labour Group in Tory-controlled Cheshire East council even managed to have the motion debated and an amended version passed!
There was a huge amount of press coverage in local newspapers in response to Labour Groups and Labour MPs showing their support for the campaign, including in Newcastle, Sheffield, Tower Hamlets, Calderdale, Oldham, Bolton, Bristol, Grimsby, Bury, Colchester, Bradford, and Waltham Forest.
